Coastal Directory data report · October 2026

State of Local Hobby Shops 2026

We counted every verified, open coin, card and comic shop in the United States. Wyoming has the most per person. Mississippi has the fewest. California and Texas have the most shops and still rank in the bottom ten.

Shops per 100,000 people

Each square is a state, shaded by shops per 100,000 people (key below the map). Hover or tap a state for its counts.

Ranks cover the 50 states; Washington, D.C. is shown but not ranked. "All three" adds the three directories together, so a shop listed as both a card shop and a comic shop counts twice.

What the count shows

What's on the shelves

Share of shops whose listing names each product or service. Listings often leave things out, so read each share as a minimum.

How many listings were real shops

Before counting, we checked every listing we collected. Many places that show up in a search for "comic book store" or "card shop" are bookstores, game cafés, pawn counters or chains with a single rack. Some had closed.

Verified and open Not that kind of shop Permanently closed Still in review, temporarily closed or duplicate

Cities with the most shops

Counted by the city in each shop's mailing address. Las Vegas addresses include unincorporated Clark County communities such as Paradise and Spring Valley.

How we counted

Coastal Directory runs three free directories: CoinsNearMe, LocalCardShopsNearMe and ComicStoresNearMe. Each listing is checked before it counts.

  • What counts as a shop. A listing counts only if it is published, marked open, and verified as that kind of shop. Big-box stores, chains with a token section, and businesses whose main trade is something else are removed.
  • Coin shops are a floor. 452 more U.S. coin listings were still being reviewed on October 26, 2026. The coin count can only rise as that review finishes.
  • Card shops include sports card shops and trading card game stores (Pokémon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Lorcana).
  • Per-person figures use the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates of resident population on July 1, 2025 (NST-EST2025-POP). The U.S. total used is 341,784,857.
  • Product shares come from the text of each listing: its description, services and tags. A shop that sells Pokémon but never says so is not counted, so every share is a minimum.
  • Shows and cons are the published events on our three calendars dated October 26, 2026 through October 26, 2027. Our card-show calendar is the most complete of the three.
  • State-by-state detail for each shop type, with Canada and Google ratings: the Comic Shop Census, Card Shop Census and Coin Shop Census. All four pages use the same October 26, 2026 shop list.
  • Not included: Puerto Rico and Canada. Washington, D.C. appears in the table but not in the rankings.

How our numbers compare

Other published counts fall on both sides of ours. Free directories say their lists are incomplete. Paid business lists count every business filed under the category, including ones that aren't really shops.

Why our comic count is higher than trade estimates. Trade estimates count stores that order new comics from the main distributors. We count storefronts that sell comics, including shops that also sell games, toys or cards. Reporters who want to check our definition can ask for the full list.
