Is This a Fair Price for My Comic?
The short answer
A fair price matches what the same issue, printing and grade actually sold for recently. For slabbed books, check GPA or GoCollect alongside eBay sold listings. For raw books, use eBay solds and grade conservatively, because sellers round up.
If you're selling raw to a dealer, expect less. The 2026 Guide puts a typical dealer offer at 40–70% of value.
Where do you find what a comic actually sold for?
Comics have better sales data than most collectibles, if you know where it lives.
- GPAnalysis (GPA) is the reference for CGC slabs: more than 7.4 million logged sales from 40-plus venues, at $10.95 a month. Dealers quote GPA to each other.
- GoCollect tracks fair market value by grade, with a useful free tier and a $9-a-month Pro plan.
- CovrPrice is strongest on raw and modern books.
- eBay sold listings are free. Search the issue and filter to Sold Items.
- Heritage Auctions' archive at comics.ha.com is free too, and it's the record for anything scarce.
The Overstreet Price Guide, now past 55 editions, is still the reference shelf for Golden and Silver Age raw baselines. For slab prices today, the market has moved to GPA and GoCollect.
Between those sources, a comic's value in a specific grade is a five-minute job. A price that can't survive those five minutes is a negotiation, not a fact.
What moves a comic's price the most?
Six things, roughly in this order:
- First appearances. Amazing Fantasy #15, Incredible Hulk #181, Amazing Spider-Man #300. Story significance lasts in a way that art or writer premiums mostly don't.
- Grade, and how rare that grade is. CGC's census shows whether a 9.8 is one of 400 or one of 4. Price follows the count.
- Era. Golden Age books are scarce because few survived. Moderns are plentiful, so their value concentrates in 9.8s and first appearances.
- Page quality and eye appeal. White pages beat cream or tan. A centered, glossy copy outsells its grade.
- Movie and TV news. Casting news spikes prices, and the spike fades after release.
- Provenance. Pedigree collections add real percentage points at auction.
How much does grade change the price?
More than most people expect, and differently for every book. The 2026 Guide's Grader Comparison Chart measured sold prices on modern keys, using 130point.com sales over roughly 14 months to September 3, 2026. With a CGC 9.8 set at 100%:
| Book | CGC 9.6 | CGC 9.4 | CGC 9.0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazing Spider-Man #300 | 34% | 25% | 19% |
| New Mutants #98 | 47% | 38% | 34% |
| Spawn #1 | 56% | n/a | n/a |
The gap between a slab and a raw copy is even wider. Against raw copies advertised as NM+, a CGC 9.8 sold for 5.2 times as much on Amazing Spider-Man #300, 3.3 times on New Mutants #98 and 4.2 times on Spawn #1.
That's the certified-versus-ungraded gap, not what grading would add to your copy. "NM" on a raw listing is the seller's opinion. If you price your raw book off a 9.8 sale, you'll be disappointed.
What should a dealer pay you for a comic?
Selling raw to a dealer, expect roughly 40–70% of value. Local shops commonly offer around 40–50% of fair market value on bulk, and closer to full value on an individually valuable key sold on its own.
Part of that gap is the dealer's margin, and it's real. Part is grading. A dealer typically prices a raw book about four tenths of a grade below whatever you call it. That gap, more than greed, is where most offers that feel like lowballs come from. A slab removes the argument.
Common books are another matter. MyComicShop says it sells most comics from the 1980s onward for $1–$3 and buys them "for less than $1.00 or not at all."
When is a cheap comic a red flag?
Two traps catch most new buyers.
Facsimile editions. Publishers reprint famous keys as facsimiles, and they sell on the secondary market next to the originals. Check the printing and the indicia before you pay a key-issue price. It's the most common way new collectors lose money.
Restoration. Color touch, trimming and married pages earn CGC's purple Restored label, and the market's rough discount is 30–50% or more off the blue-label price. On any raw vintage book worth real money, assume nothing until a slab says otherwise.

For slabbed books, GPAnalysis and GoCollect track sold prices by grade. For raw books, eBay sold listings are the best free check. Heritage's archive covers scarce books.
How much less is a CGC 9.6 worth than a 9.8?
It depends on the book. On the sales behind the 2026 Guide's Grader Comparison Chart, a 9.6 sold for 34% of the 9.8 price on Amazing Spider-Man #300, 47% on New Mutants #98 and 56% on Spawn #1.
How much will a comic shop pay for my comics?
Local shops commonly offer 40–50% of fair market value on bulk, and closer to full value on an individually valuable key. Common books from the 1980s onward often bring less than $1 each.
Why do dealers offer less than the price guide?
A dealer has to resell at a profit, and typically prices a raw book about four tenths of a grade below what the seller calls it. A slab removes the grading disagreement.
